Meet the Confords

The Cornfords live in Ruggy at 28 Coronation Street. John Cornford is a rich businessman of about fifty. He’s tall and dark. He wears dark suits but at weekends he wears casual clothes. He usually gets up at six, does some exercises and goes to the office. He never gets back before ten o’clock at night, so he doesn’t see much of his family. He is interested in collecting pictures of horses. At the moment he is traveling on business in America because he’s opening an office over there next year.

Sarah, Mr. Cornford’s wife, is forty-five. She is an attractive woman with blond hair and soft blue eyes. She is kind and gentle, very practical and full of common sense; Sarah is a house-wife. She looks after the house and the family.

The Cornfords have two children – a son and a daughter. Their son’s name is Steve. He is 22. He is a clever young man. He works at a design office. He is a very outdoor person – he is a keen sailor and a member of the local yacht club. When he has a chance Steve and his friends get down to the coast for the weekend, camping there and sailing in the competitions.

Steve has a number of close friends and a beautiful girl friend, Pauline, by name. Pauline studies at a teacher’s training college. Steve and Pauline often go out for the evening to the cinema or else they go skating at the Rugby skating rink. Pauline is a very good skater and she is trying to teach Steve how to skate well.

Steve’s sister, Alice, is a lovely, quiet, serious girl. She goes to grammar school.

Sarah’s mother, Grandma, as the children call her, also lives with them. She is in her late sixties.

Полина очень хорошо катается, и она пытается научить Стива кататься на коньках как она.

Сестра Стива, Алиса, прекрасная, тихая, серьезная девушка. Она учится в гимназии.

Мать Сары, бабуля, как называют ее дети, тоже живет с ними. Ей уже около 70.

Boss’ private office

(What a modern day office should look like)

In the designers’ community there is a clear dividing line between “Westerners” and “Russian traditionalists”. Minimal furnishings and high-tech office equipment are typical of the boss’ private offices in the West. The majority of Russian company directors firmly believe that their private office should convey a sense of awesomeness. The furnishings of the boss’ private office include a dark-wood table, with inlaid designs and other high-end furniture. The whole set-up of the boss’ private office gives you to understand that he is a man of considerable stature.

By contrast, the furniture for a Russian company’s rank-and-file employees can be the cheapest; it’s the norm for many Russian companies to economize on furniture for their office workers. Designers find it hard to work with such a company, as it will interfere in the designing process and try to teach him how he should create the office’s interior décor. Such an attitude on the part of Russian managers is incomprehensible to Westerners.

This does not mean, however, that Russian managers can be accused of being uncultured. It’s just that many of them are compelled to follow long-standing traditions. They admit that they personally have no need for a luxurious private office, and that is a hindrance to efficient work. They point out, however, that clients will find it strange if the manager’s office doesn’t have extravagant furnishings.

Attitudes are different in the United States, where people of the stature of Microsoft’s Bill Gates can go to work wearing an old sweater and a pair of sneakers. If a Russian boss did that, eyebrows would rise. Nonetheless, the number of Western-type offices is increasing in Russia every year, and this is a stable trend.

Минималистические обстановки и высокотехнологичное офисное оборудование типично для частных офисов на Западе. Большинство русских директоров компании твердо верят, что их кабинеты должны передать чувство благоговения. Обстановка кабинета начальника должна включать стол из темного дерева, инкрустированный конструкциями и другую высококачественную мебель. Вся обстановка в личном кабинете начальника дает вам понять, что он достаточно серьезный человек.

В отличие от них, мебель для рядовых сотрудников российской компании может быть дешевой, это норма для многих русских компаний - экономить на мебели для работников офиса. Дизайнерам трудно работать с такой компанией, им трудно вмешиваться в процесс проектирования и пытаться научить, как должен создаваться интерьер офиса. Такое отношение со стороны менеджеров России непонятно Западу.

Это не означает, однако, что русские менеджеры могут быть обвинены в недостатке культуры. Это означает, что многие из них привыкли следовать давним традициям. Они признают, что не нуждаются в роскошном кабинете, и это является препятствием для эффективной работы. Однако они говорят, что клиенты находят это странным, если офис менеджера не имеет экстравагантную мебель.

Отношения отличаются в Соединенных Штатах, где люди такого масштаба, как Билл Гейтс могут пойти на работу в старом свитере и кроссовках. Если русский начальник так сделает, то это будет очень удивительно. Тем не менее, ряд офисов западного типа растет в России с каждым годом, и это устойчивая тенденция.
